Transcribe! History - version 9.50 Release Notes, released 14 Jan 2026

The Windows version requires 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. We will keep version 8.80.1 available for those few people still running 32-bit Windows 10.

The Mac version requires macOS 13 (Ventura), 14 (Sonoma), 15 (Sequoia), or 26 (Tahoe) on Intel or Apple Silicon. We will keep earlier Transcribe! versions available for people running earlier versions of macOS.

The Linux version is 64-bit only. We will keep version 8.80 available for people running 32-bit Linux.

It is free to existing users : it will recognise your license key and you shouldn't need to enter it again.

Please let me know of any problems you find.

Changes:

- Windows: It should now be possible to use the 64-bit version of Transcribe! on Microsoft Surface ARM machines running Windows 11 (but with Windows 10 on ARM you will have to use the 32-bit version of Transcribe!)

- Added the ability to crop videos (control-drag the edges, or command-drag on Mac). Useful if, for example, you want to focus on the player's hands without the video taking up too much screen space.

- You can now tell the Export commands to add timestamps to filenames. See Preferences - Export.

- You can now "nudge" the values in the text boxes in the lower toolbar with the up/down-arrow and page-up/down keys. See Help - Getting Started - "The Transcription Window"

- Video subtitle handling for on-screen display (not export): we used to always overlay subtitles at video source resolution and then enlarge them along with the video. This meant that the subtitles could be blurry or even unreadable if the original video was very lo-res. We now have a "De-blur Subtitles" command on the Video Viewer menu.

- Video Viewer: you can now right-click to get a popup menu. Particularly useful in full-screen mode.

- Added new commands: MarkerEditNearestCurrent "Edit the marker nearest to the current point." MarkerEditNearestPlaying "Edit the marker nearest to the playing or paused point.". You will need to create a keyboard shortcut to use them.

- Mac: fixed bug launching default web browser where in fact it used to open the default program for html files which was not always the web browser.

- Windows & Linux: fixed bug. You couldn't access the main menus using the <alt> key when there is no sound file loaded.

- Mac: fixed bug. An HID footpedal would be ignored at launch until app activation changes.

- Various other minor tweaks and bugfixes.
